Enpirion – Profile

December 28, 2004

HQ: Bloombsbury, NJ
Founded: 2001
Management: CEO Mark Downing is a Brit who formerly ran marketing for Micrel. Founders Ashraf Lotfi, Ph.D. and William Troutman, Ph.D. previously led power management R&D at Bell Labs.
Investors: In December 2004, Enpirion did a $17M round led by RRE Ventures and Columbia Capital with Intel Capital and the Series A investors Canaan Partners and SAS Investors. Series A was $8M in January 2003.
Business Model: Fabless semiconductor outfit focused on power supply for the new generation of smaller electronic products. Analysts say that Enpirion products reduce real-estate requirements and part count by more than half, while slashing development costs and time-to-market.
It’s Small!
Competitors: Everyone in the analog semiconductor business.
Dirt: Enpirion has power geeks hoping up-and-down with glee. “The EN5330 is in a Dual Flat No-lead (DFN) TSSOP footprint package that covers just over 100mm² of board space. Including the minimum of three external components, the entire DC-to-DC converter can be placed in as little as 135mm² of single-sided, or 102mm² of double-sided board space. Combined with a height profile of 2.2mm and efficiencies up to 90%, the EN5330 is the perfect POL power solution for applications with even the smallest space requirements.” So you see it’s perfect.
