DeviceScape Software – Profile
HQ: Brisbane, CA
Founded: 2001/ Previously Instant802.
Management: Scotsman David Fraser previously held nearly all management positions over 13 years at Wind River – other than CEO. He was CMO, Senior VP/GM Product Business, VP/GM of Networking and VP of Engineering. He was named CEO in October 2004.
Investors: Company raised $12.2M in January 2005 in a Series B round from Applied Materials Ventures, August Capital, Enterprise Partners, JAFCO Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
Business Model: Devicecape started as an OpenSource project that was co-opted by VCs, and given a new CEO, name, and logo. Devicescape now sells software to deploy and manage WiFi wireless networks. Buyers are ISPs and WiFi product manufacturers. DeviceScape’s initial trick was that it allowed many APs to be configured as if they were a single AP.
Competitors: Proxim, ManageEngine.
Dirt: Company appears to be a bit of a restart. Former CEO Greg Nguyens created a splash when his company released OpenAP, a Linux distribution for WiFi access points. But he was unable to take the company places, despite a Series A from prestigious investors. The VCs have brought in Fraser who hasn’t had much time to date to carry out a new strategy.
