AllBusiness.com – Profile
HQ: San Bruno
Management: Chairman is Rich Harrock, who is also its VC. CEO Teymour Boutros-Ghali handed over job to Tony Glaves in 2001, but it’s unclear if the company has a CEO at this point.
Investors: VantagePoint Venture Partners invested $10M in July 2004. The company initially raised $20M and was sold for $225M in March of 2000 in a disastrous decision by GE’s NBCi. The site was then re-purchased in April of 2002 by founder Rich Harroch, who is also the VantagePoint partner who made the latest investment. Harroch participates in the World Series of Poker and penned Poker for Dummies. He clearly knows when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.
Business Model: Your basic How-To-Start-A-Business guide, put online for free with forms, contracts, directories, etc. Nothing special, unless they are going to use this as a launch for additional, more-compelling products and services. An ad-revenue model at this point, but traffic is not big enough for much white meat.
Competitors: Business.com, Yahoo Finance, and innumerable niche business sites.
Dirt: The company positions itself as the Yahoo for small businesses, which doesn’t add up. Might be a nice media property, OK URL, but certainly not a huge revenue source. If Harrock can get another payout from this, we are not worthy.
