Mobile News’ Circa Raises $750K
San Francisco based Circa has raised $750K in seed funding from eonCapital, Quotidian Ventures, TechStars’ David Cohen and David Tisch, Tumblr’s David Karp, SK Ventures’s Eric Norlin, MightyText’s Manesh Arora, Pedro Torres-Picon, Rick Webb, Behance’s Scott Belsky and Foodspotting’s Soraya Darabi. The company was founded by CEO Matt Galligan, who was CEO of SimpleGeo, and and Icanhascheezburger’s Ben Huh.
The company is in stealth mode but says it is building a news app.
One small problem is that there is already another popular app called Circa App, which does ‘ghosting’ where you can locate a building or place and see what it looked like in the past.
Circa had told Techcrunch that “Huh came up with basic idea for Circa from his “Moby Dick Project,” whose goal is to create discussions about how and what can be done to solve the problems we face with news presentation. Galligan says the concept has evolved significantly from some of these early thoughts.”
They add that “We’ve got a pretty massive vision for where this goes, but we’re starting out with changing the way that breaking news is written, distributed and read. This isn’t going to be another social news app, or aggregator. We’ve re-imagined the entire process of news from the ground up to produce the news experience that we would want to be a part of.”
