Quickoffice - Profile
HQ: Mountain View, CA
Founded: 1998 (previously Cutting Edge Software)
Management: CEO & co-founder Barry Cottle was CIO and COO at Palm’s content and access division. Prior to that he was at Disney for nearly a decade as SVP of marketing for something called Disney Televentures.
Investors: In May 2005, the company raised $7M led by Mayfield Fund. The deal was called Series C because the company has morphed a couple of times, but this is the first round of funding for the new Quickoffice.
Business Model: QuickOffice permits users of smart phones to edit Microsoft Word, Excell, and Powerpoint documents. The software runs on PalmSource and Symbian operating systems.
Competitors: Dataviz, and potentially with Good Technology and RIM , Microsoft, in the future.
Dirt: For a company that has been around so long, Quickoffice seals seem fairly anemic, however, the company has been repositioned several times and given strong sales for the likes of Good Technology, it seems logical that smart phone users will want to have greater access to their Word and Powerpoint files. Quickoffice needs to get sales going before the likes of Good, RIM, and Microsoft jump in.
