Mobile Ad Server MoPub Raises $12M

San Francisco-based MoPub has very quickly made itself a player in the mobile world and in digital advertising for that matter. The company announced today it had raised $12M in Series B led by Jafco Ventures and with from current investors Harrison Metal Capital and Accel. MoPub raised  $6.5M round in July of last year. The current round also includes a strategic investment from Publicis Groupe’s  Iris Capital/OPV.

MoPub can be use to serve direct sold ads into mobile Web and apps as well as to optimize mobile ad networks and to tap MoPub’s real time bidding marketplace.

MoPub says it  serves 18 billion ads per month, for more than 5K publishers, and 10K mobile apps. CEO Jim Paine says “We’re the largest ad server exchange for smartphones and for in-app.”

What is impressive is that MoPub was not the first to arrive on the scene. Doubleclick is the incumbent ad server and does mobile but it doesn’t make people happy. Moreover, Mobclix, Admarvel and a host of other mobile ad servers were on the scene well before MoPub.
We use MoPub and think the product is solid. That said we think that MoPub has been successful because the company out-hustles others.  Up and down the line from sales to account management to marketing MoPub just does a better job than the competition.
