CheckThis Raises Seed for Web Poster Biz
NYC-based CheckThis has raised $910K in seed funding from Lerer Ventures, SV Angel, Index Ventures, Betaworks, Seedcamp and angel investors Taavet Hinrikus (early Skype employee) and GroupMe co-founders Jared Hecht and Steve Martocci. CheckThis was founded in Belgium by CEO Frédéric della Faille.
CheckThis is set-up as a free service for users to create a Web page as easily as possible. Unlike blog platforms like WordPress.com or Blogger, CheckThis is more for throway ideas like a Lost Cat poster online or a Flash sale or garage sale announcement.
There is nothing new with CheckThis, rather it seems to recognize that other Web platforms have competed with each other by offering more and CheckThis is doing a rear guard by offering much less. We imagine it’s kind of a nightmare to be a product manager there, unless you are lazy, as if CheckThis offers more it loses its purpose.
The company says it has seen 4,000 pages created each month, and at its current size, there are more than 260 pageviews per page on average. That’s not super impressive but there must be something going on for these investors to get excited about. For sure, Tumbrl’s growth caught a lot of investors by surprise. How can CheckThis make money? The same way others do, selling custom themes and other upgrades, maybe some ads. So far CheckThis isn’t doing mobile but we wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t next.
