MySQL – Profile

April 19, 2005

HQ: Uppsala, Sweden
Founded: 1995
Management: The company was founded in Sweden by two Swedes and a Finn: David Axmark, Allan Larsson and Michael “Monty” Widenius who have worked together since the 80’s. CEO is Mårten Mickos (yes, that’s an umlaut or something on his name). Mickos was CEO at MatchON Sports.
Investors: Last funding round was $19.5M in May 2003 led by Benchmark Capital with Index Ventures.
Business Model: MYSQL sells licenses to the largest open source database, and provides support. The company claims more than 6M active installations.
Competitors: Oracle, IBM, Microsoft.
Dirt: MySQL beats the Big Boys on costs. A MySQL license is about $600 per server vs. comparable Oracle product at $5000. Sure, users get less functionality that many projects cannot do without. But many projects don’t require much functionality. So companies like Google or DaimlerChrysler can use MySQL for specific roles. Additionally, the cost differential in Chinese or Brazilian currency is huge so we expect MySQL will become the dominant database in those countries and others. MySQL poses a major challenge to the incumbants – expect a blockbuster IPO when market conditions are right.

And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
