Comdex: Geekfest Nixed Again
March 30, 2005
TechWeb reports that Comdex, the annual geek confab, has been cancelled for the second year in a row. At its height, Comdex attracted over 200,000 visitors to Las Vegas.
While these cancellations are usually seen as an indication that the tech industry is still in recession, we actually think this simply reflects the fact that Comdex was too big for its own good and largely irrelevant. Conference-goers prefer specialized events that don’t require waiting in taxi lines for two hours. Throw a social networking or RSS conference, and you’ll find that the technology industry is just fine.

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey’s Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
