Spim is the New Spam

Washingtonpost.com offers a good overview of one of the newest spam frontiers: your IM client – hence “Spim.” The story cites recent findings from the Pew Internet & American Life Project which state that “seventeen million Americans who use services like America Online’s Instant Messenger and Microsoft’s MSN Messenger have received unsolicited commercial messages through the services at least once… .”
More alarmingly, Francis deSouza, CEO of IMLogic tells the WaPo that “about 400 million people use some kind of instant messaging service today, sending between 5 billion and 6 billion instant messages a day.” That’s a lot of potential spim or, worse yet, a mega-virus.

    Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey’s Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
