Google’s Sharp Elbows
It used to be that entrepreneurs were always asked whether Microsoft would become a competitor. These days it is Google that is becoming the threatening hulk. This week, Google announced video search, which is sure to be very upsetting news for a variety of start-ups hoping to find value in that niche. Now we are hearing rumblings that Google may enter the VoIP market. Once a user has done a search to find say, a local dry cleaner, they could hit a call button and start talking. London-based Times broke the story and speculated on a recruiting ad on Google.com that could indicate a move into VoIP. The ad seeks a “strategic negotiator” responsible for making deals for dark fiber, optical networks that are in place but not currently in use.
