Wi-Fi Warning

January 19, 2005 offers a good overview of the challenges inherent in securing Wi-Fi networks. General clueless-ness and shifting security standards are combining to create huge numbers of vulnerable personal Wi-Fi networks. The article cites the following prediction from Gartner: some 80 percent of U.S. residential wireless local area networks, or WLANs, will classify as “unsecured” by 2007.

Both software (Symantec and McAfee) and hardware (Cisco and Broadcom) behemoths are already developing products to improve network security. We’ll be keeping an eye out for start-ups with novel approaches to tackling this problem.
