Reconnex – Profile

December 16, 2004

HQ: Mountain View, CA
Founded: 2003
Management: Don Massaro is CEO, a 30-year tech vet with a stint at Xerox and several start-ups to his name. Could be the most self-indulgent managment page we’ve ever seen, replete with client quotes like: “Don Massaro is a Silicon Valley classic.” Don’t mess with CTO Dr. Ratinder Paul Singh Ahuja: he “holds a 4th Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo and is an avid practitioner of QiGong and weight training.”
Portrait of a “Silicon Valley classic”
Investors: Raised $5.8 million in Series B funding in December ’04, bringing total financing to $11.3M. Existing investors Norwest Venture Partners and Outlook Ventures co-led the round.
Business Model: Develops electronic risk management products that allow companies to guard against information disclosures. Essentially an automated gatekeeper – a kind of reverse firewall that monitors outbound information and flags documents that might give away company secrets or violate industry regulations. First product was an appliance you attach to your coprorate network that costs about $50K.
Competitors: Vericept, Oakley Technologies
Dirt: Building products that help companies deal with the regulatory flurry that arose after the corporate malfeasance of the late ’90s strikes us as a pretty good idea. Automated watchdogs sound good in theory – but we’ll be interested to see just how well such products perform in the real world.
