Digital Orchid – Profile
HQ: San Diego, CA
Founded: Launched in 2002, plus 2 years of R&D before that.
Management: Founder/Chairman is Georges Daou, who founded Daou Systems, a once high-flying healthcare, publicly-traded infotech company. Other staff members have impressive credentials in the wireless industry, however there may be too many cooks in the small kitchen – they have 4 other top guys as CEO, CTO, CBO?, and President. Among their advisors are the Hollywood Producer of Crimes of the Heart, and founders of USA Networks, and JD Edwards.
Investors: Company was financed by angels until December 2004, when QUALCOMM invested an unspecificed amount.
Business Model: Company partners with content owners like NASCAR and ESPN, then delivers apps to end users via their cell phones. Apps include: breaking news alerts and headlines, dynamic polling, live chat, instant messaging services, friend and family locators.
Competitors: UIEvolution, Summus.
Dirt: It’s nice that QUALCOMM has shown enthusiasm for Digital Orchid, however, the company has not had an auspicious start. This is true of many other wireless application companies. Still, we are not impressed by Digital Orchid’s strategic approach of developing a family of applications. Others that have focussed on just one app – wireless games, ringtones, instant messengers – have made much more progress in the marketplace.
