Aruba Networks – Profile

November 3, 2004

HQ: Sunnyvale, CA
Founded: 2002
Management: CEO Don LeBeau was SVP at Cisco from 1992 to 1997. Chairman is Dominic Orr who was President of Nortel’s Web Systems.
Investors: Aruba has raised $59M over three rounds from Matrix Partners, Sequoia Capital, Trinity Ventures and WK Technology Fund (no site).
Business Model: Sells centralized wireless LAN system for about $10K p/box. Has won a slew of product awards, however, products are not vastly differentiated from Cisco’s.
Competitors: Airespace, Chantry, Trapeze Networks, Wavelength, Vivato as well as incumbants Cisco and Extreme Networks.
Dirt: This space has been arguably overfunded and the shakeout has begun. Legra Systems raised $21M but its pieces have been sold off and AirFlow Networks is no more. Perhaps the biggest shield that Aruba enjoys is a reseller deal with HP, however, Airespace has one with Alcatel and Nortel so there are not many other big deals to be had.
