BusinessWeek connects the dots to show that the first wave of online dating companies – Match.com, True.net, and MatchNet – are now disapointing. They are making lay-offs, postponing IPOs and are entering slow-growth phases.
BW doesn’t name a single culprit but paints a picture of an overly competitive market. Wireless companies like Dodgeball are making inroads. Biggies like AOL are getting dating game. Meanwhile, social networking companies like Friendster are dating sites in disguise. The problem that Match.com faces is the same problem that Friendster faces – they don’t have any proprietary apps so anyone can and will play.
