3VR – Profile

October 1, 2004

HQ: San Francisco
Founded: 2004
Management: CEO Stephen Russell was most recently VP/GM at Inktomi. Head of Engineering, Bob Vallone, previously ran engineering for Tivo.
Investors: VantagePoint Venture Partners invested $5M in series A funding in June 2004.
Business Model: Brings technology seen on high tech TV shows like 24 to corporate security. Product allows security pros to search for, analyze and evaluate information, find trends, and track suspects across years of data.
Competitors: Vidient, Speco Techologies, Pelco, Channel Vision.
Dirt: Even though they have little experience in this area, VCs are increasing their exposure to homeland security companies, including a couple of recent investments that tackle the same problem – with investments in 3VR and Vidient. The corporate market that 3VR targets is much more palatable than the government market, which certainly has needs but is slowed by unpredictable funding. As the government continues to push security responsibilities out to corporations, this should be a nice sector.
