Game Over

September 7, 2004

The air was thick with four-letter words as our moles in attendance at a trio of gaming conferences in London (ECTS, EGN, and GSL) described how they gave up their Labor Day weekends only to attend bad events. How bad? “Sega and Microsoft abandoned their booths.” According to one depressed British blogger – “Dare I say that the show was worse this year than even the miserable dotcom bubble bursting show in 2001.” Word that the once high-and-mighty Acclaim Entertainment declared bankruptcy might have contributed to the industry’s missing moxy. But why didn’t the VC funding going into mobile games create some hint of excitement? BusinessWeek sees it as a cyclical issue.
