Craig Newmark – Frisco’s P. Diddy
The a:c wasn’t stalking Craigslist’s Craig yesterday, just enjoying a donut at a cornershop in SF’s Sunset district while picking up a new cell phone. Across the street, attached to a fairly rundown, small Victorian was a hand-drawn Craigslist.org sign – such are the world headquarters of the popular community site. At 4:45PM, Craig emerged, appearing tranquil at the end of his day, and walked towards Golden Gate Park.
We recall first meeting Craig when he was interviewing for a job at the height of the dot.mania. We were lurking in the wings of a certain start-up where arrogant interviewers pitied Craig for his inability to monetize Craigslist. And at the time, perhaps Craig was even pitying himself. Obviously, Craig never came to work for the start-up and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Craig rules the Net roost – and he serves as a reminder to all those Web geeks who toil in obscurity that perseverance can pay.
Now Craig IMs with Pierre Omidyar and Meg Whitman
