Sorrent – Profile
HQ: San Mateo
Management: Sorrent was founded by EA heavy Scott Orr, but two years into the company and just after its second round, he was ‘promoted’ to Chairman to make way for a new CEO, and he currently has no title. New CEO, Scott Ballard, has a shiny resume – he was CEO of SONICblue, MyFamily.com and 3Dfx Interactive.
Investors: Company raised $20M in series C in July 2004. BA Venture Partners (Lead), Globespan Capital Partners, New Enterprise Associates, and Sienna Ventures. Series B was a $5.5M deal in April 2003.
Business Model: Mobile games. Sorrent partners with major brand-owners like Fox and Atari and transfers their properties to be played on mobile devices. It also partners with carriers like Verizon and handset makers like Sony Ericsson to market the games.
Hillary Clinton is the ref, Ralph Nader is ring girl.
Competitors: Digital Chocolate, Airborne Entertainment, Jamdata, Game Play Mobile, GameLoft, WireJack.
Dirt: Mobile gaming got hot in the Summer of 2004. Sorrent has the best content and best distribution of any company except for perhaps Mforma. But gaming is a hits business and Sorrent needs a hit.
