Finjan Software – Profile
HQ: San Jose, CA
Founded: January 1996
Management: Tenacious Israeli Shlomo Touboul is founder, Chairman and CEO, but has a new cast of characters under his control. Eight years, $40M… people are bound to move on.
Investors: Did D round of $10M with Cisco Systems (Lead), Benchmark Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Israel Seed Partners. Finjan illustrates how hot the market is for anti-spam and anti-virus software. The Company is eight years old, was a Red Herring “25 cool companies to watch” back in 1997, and has accumulated $40M without great success. But with the renewed excitement in the market, Finjan has managed to attract the A list in the D round. In 2002, Finjan had an $8M series C round.
Competitors: Commtouch Software, Bitdefender, Symantec
Business model: Sells anti-spam, anti-virus software for both networks and individuals. We’ve heard of a $13B company called Symantec that does some of the same things, but maybe after eight years Finjan is finally on to something.
Dirt: The company’s fortunes bottomed in 2001 when it laid off nearly 50% of its staff.
